Resumen
Untreatable infections caused by multidrug-resistant pathogens are emerging and spreading rapidly. Finding novel classes of antibiotics, therefore, is the first task in addressing the antimicrobial resistance crisis that threatens public health. Cyanobacteria are considered one of the most promising, yet untapped source of natural products with potential antimicrobial activity for new antibiotic development. Numerous recent studies have demonstrated the potent and highly active extracts/molecules from Cyanobacteria, despite the few taxonomic groups studied to date. Moreover, cutting-edge technologies are emerging to enhance drug discovery rates, including elicitation, multiomics, and gene manipulation. Although these technologies have been applied less frequently to Cyanobacteria exploration, their implementation is expected to reach new cyanobacterial antimicrobial compounds.
