Abstract

Anthropogenic activities such as agriculture and livestock farming alter the chemical balance of the soils and water bodies contaminating them with different compounds such as nitrates. This contamination presents a risk to the environment and human health, therefore becomes important to understand the factors affecting water quality. In this work, a station is developed to monitor water quality by measuring nitrates using the spectroscopy technique. The designed station automates the measurement process from extracting a sample from a body of water for data collection. The system has IoT capability that uploads data to a remote access platform for continuous monitoring of chemical changes. The results were obtained using a set of seven standards with different nitrate concentrations to validate and analyze the reliability of the system. The station was validated with all sensors, actuators and control elements working together.
