Pointcloudlib: 3D Modeling from Digital Images in Python

Abstract

This paper introduces pointcloudlib, a Python library designed to simplify 3D reconstruction from digital images without relying on specialized hardware such as LiDAR sensors. The project encapsulates a modular pipeline into an accessible API aimed at developers with limited knowledge of photogrammetry or computer vision. The system includes independent modules for depth estimation, point cloud generation, and point cloud alignment, as well as a function for complete pipeline execution. The implementation leverages tools such as Open3D and NumPy, and incorporates FPFH-based feature extraction and RANSACbased registration for robust point cloud alignment. Experimental results show that the library can generate consistent and properly aligned 3D models from RGB images, making it a valuable tool for educational, research, and industrial applications.
