Translated title of the contribution: Inventory of buildings of caribbean architecture in the city of Limón, Costa Rica

Research output: Book/ReportBookpeer-review

Abstract

Costa Rican Caribbean Architecture is one of the most characteristic elements of Limon City’s historic urban landscape; furthermore, it is a representative example of vernacular architecture developed in the country. Despite its heritage value, there are few studies that delve into this issue, and there is a high risk of this resource to disappear due to the deterioration processes and premeditated destruction that many properties have suffered, largely motivated by the lack of public awareness.
The void of qualitative and quantitative information in this regard has motivated the project “Conservation of Costa Rican Caribbean Architecture from the application of advanced techniques
for the study of agents causing injuries in buildings”, which has represented a significant effort for defining characteristics of this type of architecture, as well as identifying the assets that are still
preserved in the Historic Center and the Jamaica Town neighborhood of Limón City.
As part of the project results, an inventory of Caribbean Architecture buildings in the study area was prepared between 2018 and 2021. This document systematizes the inventory data,
intending to be an instrument to disseminate and preserve this sort of architecture, which is quite relevant in the country.
