Evaluation of Irrigation Requirements with Iot for Biochar-Amended Soils in Greenhouses

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

This paper presents an IoT irrigation system to automatically regulate water usage for various soil types, targeting greenhouse applications. The considerations for the utilization of low-cost soil moisture sensors and their calibration are addressed, as well as the data processing through a Web server and the drip watering control approach with electrovalves. Challenges for achieving a cost-balanced yet robust solution for IoT control, considering initial investment, reliability of the building blocks, and their maintenance, are also discussed. The IoT irrigation system could effectively differentiate water needs according to soil type composition, registering about eight times less water requirements for soil amendments with biochar.
