Abstract

The learning of mathematics is one of the pillars of elementary education, due to the instrumental nature of the contents that it covers, however, access to these contents has been hindered for the population with some type of disability, in particular, the visually impaired population. Technological advances have provided tools to facilitate access to mathematics, however, these advances have not led to a solution, because of efforts have focused on representing mathematics visually or preserving semantics for people with visual disabilities, hindering the fluid communication between these two representations. Assistive technologies have used different mathematical representation languages (LATEX, MathML, OMDoc), however screen readers do not always generate the correct reading for a mathematical expression in visual or auditory format. The present work after enumerating some problems that have been detected presents the EULER research project in progress, as an alternative for handling errors in mathematical representation; in this way, a communication bridge of mathematics is developed between people with visual disabilities and sighted people.
