Abstract
Livestock farming in Costa Rica covers 33% of the territory and contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Timber trees expand environmental services and generate economic impact on lives-tock farming. The study aimed to determine the effect of planting density in a silvopastoral system for timber production and carbon sequestration. Over 8 years the development of teak clones under six spacings was evaluated, based on three internal tree-rows inside 6m wide strips and the trees planted every 1 m; 2 m; 3 m; 4 m; 5 m and 6 m. The basis for analysis was a strip measuring 1000 linear meters by 6 meters wide. The 3 m spacing recorded the highest production with 110 m3 in the 6000 m2, captu-ring 105 tons of carbon at 8 years. Highest commercial value per individual tree was recorded under 4 m spacing with US$27 and US$31. SSP optimizes space usage and allows for a 1.2-fold increase in wood production and carbon capture compared to conventional planting
