Abstract
This study explores the design of immersive experiences for tourism and environmental conservation using augmented reality in three protected wildlife areas in northern Costa Rica: Arenal Volcano National Park, Caño Negro National Mixed Wildlife Refuge, and Juan Castro Blanco National Water Park. A six-step methodology was developed: identification and classification of resources, determination of interpretive potential, calculation of the augmentation index, selection of resources, definition of augmentation techniques, and implementation. Nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with key informants to validate the developed application. The evaluation focused on information management, maintenance, benefit, content meaning, availability, sensitivity, information contrast, attachment, and future references. Results were positive, although maintenance concerns were highlighted. The implications of using augmented reality in tourism and conservation contexts are discussed, promoting an effective use adapted to the needs of the users and the environment.
