Abstract
During the last 20 years, measures have been implemented with a view to a change in the global socioeconomic model, seeking a balance between production needs and available resources. In Latin America, achieving this balance is a challenge, having an economy based on the extraction of natural resources. Aim. Analyze the impact of the production and use of biochar in Latin America and, specifically in Costa Rica, as an alternative for achieving sustainable development goals (SDG). Development. A compilation of 93 articles is made about the production, use and impact of biochars in Latin America. The work developed regarding biocarbons in Costa Rica is identified and its relationship with compliance with the SDG’s of industry, innovation and infrastructure, sustainable cities and communities, responsible production and consumption and climate action is discussed, as well as opportunities to generate a greater impact on sustainability in the country. Conclusions. The use of carbonized materials in Latin America has hadsignificant growth, and in Costa Rica it has managed to positively impact the goals of the sustainable development goals, in areas related to agricultural production, waste management and environmental pollution.
