Abstract

This proposal presents a game design-centered study focused on engineering an intrinsically integrated educational video game for teaching x86 assembly through interactive visual metaphors. The research examines whether embedding low-level programming content as core gameplay mechanics can enhance comprehension while preserving game enjoyment and intrinsic motivation. The study will deliver a prototype, Assembly Architect, iteratively refined using the Rapid Iterative Testing and Evaluation (RITE) method and empirically evaluated with engineering students. Key evaluation metrics include (1) learning outcomes, (2) intrinsic motivation, and (3) player experience. The expected contribution of this research is an empirically evaluated approach for designing intrinsically integrated educational games targeting technical domains, supported by design principles derived from iterative development and evidence on the role of interactive visual metaphors in understanding complex programming constraints. This work advances the field of game engineering by emphasizing design innovation as a driver of educational technology.
