Project Details
Description
In recent years, the number of studies related to the addition of biologically active natural substances in animal
feed has intensified. This with the purpose of improving the health of animals and at the same time enriching
products of animal origin intended for human consumption. The interest in these natural compounds is based on
their beneficial properties, including their antioxidant potential. Nephelium lappaceum,Rambutan or Chinese
mamón -as it is and commonly found in Costa Rica. The peel of this fruit is considered waste, although studies
reveal it as an excellent natural source of antioxidants; However, there are no reports in the literature of its use
in animal feed. Therefore, the project Effect of the dietary addition of ethanolic extract of Nephelium lappaceum
(rambutan) peel on meat quality and production parameters in pigs in beginning and development was
developed. Where the effect of supplementation of pigs with the extract on feed consumption, weight gain, final
weight, carcass and meat quality was evaluated using a randomized block design, with 2 treatments (control
group and 20 g daily of EECR in the feed) with 6 repetitions (pigs) per treatment, and for each repetition the
initial, weekly and final weight will be evaluated, as well as the daily post-weaning feed consumption (43 days)
and feed conversion; along with the pH, color, dripping and cooking losses of the pigs' meat. In addition, a
postmortem inspection of the pigs was carried out to identify the type and degree of the main lesions found in
each animal. Within the objectives and activities of the previous project, the dissemination and training of different
target audiences was proposed, which was not possible to carry out in the development of the previous project.

Hence the conception of this strengthening activity that promotes inter-university relations and disseminates the
results obtained regarding the supplementation of pigs with rambutan.
