Description
Cocoa is one of the most important crops for the economies of Latin America. The symbolic significance of the cacao plant (Theobroma cacao) is a common element among the indigenous cultures of Latin America. A Pan-American worldview exists surrounding the healing, purifying, and gastronomic importance of cacao. Cocoa production serves as a livelihood for many peasant and indigenous communities. In recent years, cocoa production and other associated processes have been integrated into the tourism offerings of certain rural communities. This research aims to analyze the connections between cacao and tourism, as well as the local strategies to enhance the cocoa value chain and promote sustainable tourism in rural communities in Costa Rica. Particular attention is given to how these communities leverage cacao cultivation to strengthen their intangible cultural heritage by preserving traditional farming practices and promoting this heritage through small-scale alternative tourism.
