Project Details

Description

Forest plantation monitoring normally requires the establishment of permanent measurement plots (PMPs) to evaluate plantation variables, such as number of trees, diameter, tree height, tree diseases, as well as plantation volume and biomass. Forest plantation monitoring is expensive; plantation farmers and FONAFIFO must report it and use this evaluation to improve the productivity of forest plantations.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or drones) have demonstrated great potential to perform multiple functions, and with the use of additional sensors and medium- to high-resolution cameras, it is possible to produce information to evaluate the quality and state of development of forest plantations as well as plantations of other crops. However, their use requires protocols for their comprehensive use and the calibration of models to relate data taken from the UAVs with tree field data, as well as to validate these models

This project was designed to develop protocols for the efficient use of UVAs in forest plantation monitoring, as well as to provide precise data on tree health, size, and productivity. The aim is to provide data to enable the advancement of precision forestry, increase forest plantation productivity, and reduce management costs
