Project Details
Description
The STEM Training Program arose as a response to the need posed by the Regional
Education Directorate of San Carlos to the Tecnológico de Costa Rica (TEC), to strengthen
the capacities of elementary and high school teachers who teach STEM disciplines
(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The growing labor market demand
for professionals with STEM skills and the country's need to promote training in pure
sciences to position itself in research and development at the international level underscores
the urgency of this initiative. However, significant challenges remain, especially in rural
areas and in reducing gender gaps.
2
The State of Education 2023 report has highlighted weaknesses of Costa Rica's formal
education system, pointing out that basic sciences are the most difficult subjects. In this
context, the ProSTEM Project proposes to offer teachers a space for continuous training,
exchange of experiences, and capacity building in scientific research. This initiative will take
advantage of the logistical conditions, infrastructure, human capital, and connections with
national and international organizations that the Tecnológico de Costa Rica can offer at its
San Carlos Local Technological Campus.
The main objective is to gradually transform the Northern Huetar Region of Costa Rica into
a benchmark in STEM competencies. The target population includes elementary and high
school teachers in STEM components, belonging to the Regional Directorate of Education
of San Carlos, which serves the cantons of San Carlos and Los Chiles. The approach
strategy includes innovative and accessible training, extracurricular activities, and
educational events, as well as creating an evaluation system to measure the effectiveness
of the project and make necessary adjustments.
