Description
The agricultural sector is one of the activities with the highest water consumption in the world, as well as at the national level. Despite the large amount of water resources in Costa Rica, some regions have major problems with access to it, such as the northern area of Cartago, where there is a high level of horticultural activity, and its cultivation is of great economic relevance for the local population. With population growth and climate variability, demand has exceeded supply, and it is now more difficult for farmers to access this resource, which can negatively affect the quantity and quality of their production, and
even lead to the loss of their crops. This project seeks to provide a flow estimation tool for the catchment points of the Water User Societies (WUS, in Spanish SUA) in the area based on climatological forecasts and climate change scenarios. To this end, a hydrological model will be developed based on the geomorphological characteristics and hydrometeorological data of the area, with a view to strengthening the SUA and the producers to improve their resilience, adaptation, and water management in the face of future climate variability
