Project Details
Description
In the canton and district of Turrialba, Cartago, where this project will be developed, waste
is disposed of in a landfill that will be closed by the first quarter of 2025. 32 tons of waste
are generated daily in the canton, 54.7% of which is biodegradable. Given the imminent
closure of the landfill and the need to treat more than 16 tons of biodegradable solid waste
per day, this project is proposed. The objective is to develop skills for the proper treatment
of biodegradable waste from the commercial sector of the canton of Turrialba, through a
process of non-formal environmental education and circular economy.
2
The approach strategy will be to build the baseline of the target population by determining
the competencies in terms of environmental education, biodegradable waste management
and circular economy. This will be accomplished by developing an environmental education
program aimed at increasing the mastery of general and specific competencies related to
the valorization of biodegradable waste and circular economy. In addition, there will be
participatory workshops regarding the preparation of compost and training on the use of
organic amendments in the initial phase of the establishment of forest plantations and
agroforestry systems.
The target population will consist of 151 registered businesses associated with the food
activity, in addition to the Dr. Clodomiro Picado Twight School, with a population of 1,666
students, also the so-called Mercado Libre de Turrialba, where 128 people participate.
Finally, the Association of Recycling People of Turrialba (ASOPRET) will participate, with a
total of 17 members.
