Project Details

Description

The Municipality of Oreamuno has been developing alternatives for the proper management of different types of solid waste. The organic fraction is the most important one in terms of quantity and up today the treatment and disposal is not an efficient one. Two alternatives have been discussed and one put into practice. A pilot project on organic waste from households has been implemented in the last two years but the flow produced in the vegetable market does not receive any treatment and is being disposed of in the landfill. The municipal solid waste management plan 2018-2022 included activities related to the treatment of this fraction but due to different situations it was not implemented. This project aims to propose a management program for the organic waste produced at the farmer's market in the canton of Oreamuno, through an analysis of the current management situation which will allow determining points for improvement and proposing a management program. In addition, there is an interest in training municipal collaborators, as well as vendors and visitors to the market. The target population or beneficiaries of the project are diverse. First, the people who carry out sales processes, which are around 100 people, the municipality collaborators provide the maintenance and cleaning activities, the inhabitants of the San Rafael district, and the people who live near the fairgrounds, who are the ones who, directly receive bad odors, along with the presence of insects and rodents that feed on this waste. The main product of the project is a waste management program for the vegetable market, which can be used by other municipalities that have farmers' markets and do not have a management program, as well as the training of collaborators and visitors to the fair.. The work is planned in coordination with the Municipality and the collaborators in the sales positions and visitors.
