Description

Strawberry in Costa Rica is considered a permanent crop in the hands of small producers. Most of
the strawberry producing farms (39%) are located in Cartago, followed by Alajuela, San José and
Heredia, with an annual yield of approximately 50 t/ha. Llano Grande is the main producing area in
the country, with 120 hectares of strawberries. There are currently 5 organizations of strawberry
producers in the country. All these organizations represent about 50 producers, which, despite
being incipient, are fighting to support research and training efforts and try, together with
government institutions and academia, to rescue lost areas and resume activity, which It has been
severely affected by pests and diseases, and has recently been struck down by the Covid-19
pandemic crisis. Therefore, at this stage of the project, the aim is to carry out a transfer of plant
material and knowledge to increase strawberry cultivation through: 1. Optimizing the
micropropagation of vitroplants of two commercial strawberry varieties (San Andreas and Iliana) ,
guaranteeing its innocuousness through electronic microscopy tests, 2. Execution of irradiation
tests for the medium-term production of new strawberry varieties through the use of Gamma ray
technology and 3. Development of training for farmers around the efficient management of
vitroplants in greenhouse and subsequent acclimatization in the field. The target population will be
strawberry producers from Llano Grande de Cartago, contacted through the Cooperative
represented by Mr. Carlos Pontigo. For this proposal, meetings will be held with the beneficiary
producers, through the mediation of the Cooperative, with the aim of raising awareness about the
importance, scope and benefits of the objectives set forth here, as well as agreeing on the specific
activities for the participation of the producers and communicate the pertinent information regarding
the organization of training.
