Project Details
Description
The health emergency caused by COVID-19 stopped the school year worldwide. Costa Rica was
not the exception. In March of 2020, the Ministry of Public Education decided to continue the
teaching and learning processes under distance education to avoid the students’ disengagement
from education. Later, on December 15, 2020, MEP announced the return to face-to-face classes
under the modality of combined instruction which included both on site and distance interactions.
Finally, in 2022, MEP decided to return to in-person education after two years. This case study,
based on inductive qualitative research, will collect and triangulate data through semi-structured
virtual interviews, document gathering and on-site body mapping. Content analysis (Hatch, 2002)
will be carried out to categorize the primary school teachers’ perceptions using ATLAS.ti (ATLAS.ti
Scientific Software Development GmbH, 2022), a software designed to analyze qualitative data.
This study aims to describe the perception of six primary English teachers from Dirección Regional
de Educación Sarapiquí regarding in-person education for a better comprehension of the
pedagogical mediation practices and professional context of the teachers during the sanitary crisis
of COVID-19.
