Project Details
Description
It is intended the development of a technology transfer package designed to increase the
productivity and quality of grape cultivation in the Cartago region, Costa Rica, in a protected
environment that facilitates the adoption of innovative and advanced practices to increase its
productivity and quality is pursued, considering the specific geographical and climatic
context, the optimization of available resources and the proper training of farmers in the use
of the proposed technology.
To achieve this, the characterization of existing production units in Cartago will be carried
out, mainly those linked to the national high-tech program project for the economic
reactivation of the agricultural sector (AGRINNOVACION 4.0) in the Eastern Central Region
of Cartago of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), which coincide with the area
established for the project, which will imply a detailed diagnosis that will consider factors
such as size of the farms, geographical location, prevailing climatic conditions, available
infrastructure and the workforce, such as basic element to establish the context in which the
cultivation of grapes in a protected environment will be implemented.
The design of crop establishment in protected environment will include the selection of the
most suitable grape varieties for the environment, the design of an efficient irrigation system,
soil preparation and planting planning. The basis of this design will be to provide farmers
with the necessary guidelines to successfully carry out the establishment phase of the grape
crop in three stages: (1) Implementation of the crop establishment plan, ensuring that the
recommendations are strictly followed of the planting design plan. (2) Implementation of a
maintenance program that covers critical aspects such as pruning, fertilization, pest and
disease control, and adequate irrigation. This ensures healthy growth and optimal grape
production. (3) Design and implementation of a continuous monitoring plan for the crop,
which will incorporate advanced technological tools, such as soil moisture sensors and
weather stations, to collect relevant data on the status of the crop. The data collected will be
used to make informed decisions and adjust growing practices based on agricultural,
climatological, and environmental needs.
The process focuses on the transfer of the technologies associated with each of the three
stages of crop establishment to the project beneficiaries, focused on the interpretation of this
data and making informed decisions to guarantee efficient management of the crop.
