Optimización del componente forestal del programa nacional de fomento de sistemas silvopastoriles carbono-neutral

Project: Research Projects Internally fundedBasic and applied research

Project Details

Description

Livestock production is the most widespread land use activity, present on over 1.5 million hectares, around 30% of the country's surface (INEC 2014). The meat price crisis, the low technology used by farmers, along with cattle theft, the effects of climate change, and the weakness of their organizations explain why it is currently a vulnerable activity,

associated with poverty and low human development. The situation worsens since most small farmers are not eligible for credit due to their legal status or the inability to use their assets as collateral. Silvopastoral systems have been promoted for decades, and a wealth of knowledge has been generated. However, a true integration between forestry and livestock sectors, as expected, has never materialized. The project will prioritize small and medium-sized farms across the country, particularly in the lowlands (0 to 1000 hectares). In a joint effort between FONAFIFO (National Financial Forestry Fund), CORFOGA (Livestock Development Corporation), and TEC (Forest Engineering School), a permanent national program will be implemented to improve livestock farms and convert them into carbon-neutral silvopastoral systems. This program will place special emphasis on improving the competitiveness and economic situation of small and medium-sized cattle producers in regions with lower levels of human development. CORFOGA has strategically established a network of 20 Field Schools throughout the country as training sites, which are considered essential to its development strategy. As part of this strategy, FONAFIFO will develop an innovative financial model (credit + ESP) for the forestry component of the silvopastoral system. TEC will optimize the planting of various woody tree species within the silvopastoral system, developing several planting options with highly valuable tree species and determining the number of trees needed to achieve carbon balance.

General Objective
