Description

The Onion (Allium cepa) is a monocotyledonous plant of the lily family, native to Central Asia.
It is widely cultivated in Asia Minor and Europe. Onion is used both as food and as a
condiment. The main varieties of onion are white, yellow and purple. In Costa Rica,
approximately 42,404 hectares of onion were planted in 2021. 75% of the production was
concentrated in the province of Cartago. Onion can be grown all year round, in regions with
temperatures between 10 °C and 20 °C, mainly in the South Central, Eastern Central, Western
Central and Chorotega regions. However, the production sector lacks an adequate
technological platform for making timely and accurate decisions. (INEC, National Agricultural
Survey 2021, 2022). Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is a herbaceous plant that produces edible
tubers. It has been fundamental in human nutrition and is the fourth most important crop in the
world, after wheat, corn and rice. Rich in proteins, amino acids, minerals and vitamin C, the
potato is grown in small areas in Costa Rica, mainly in highland areas. Cartago is the province
with the largest planted area (78.51%), followed by Alajuela (18.68%), San José (2.20%) and
other provinces with less than 1%. The main producing cantons are Alvarado, Oreamuno,
Cartago, Dota, Naranjo, Zarcero, Paraíso, Turrialba and El Guarco. (IICA, 2021)The potato

Currently, the horticultural sector in Costa Rica has a great opportunity to have a technological
tool that allows it to access timely and accurate information on the economic situation of its
crops, thus facilitating decision-making. In addition, the fertility management of potato and
onion crops is inadequate, since generic recipes are followed that do not adjust to the specific
needs of the crop, the desired yield or the particular fertility of the soil of each farm. This
situation causes nutritional imbalances and an excess or deficiency of one of the 16 mineral
elements that plants require, which results in unnecessary expenditure on fertilizers.
Therefore, this proposal seeks to link fertility management with the profitability of potato and
onion production. The plan is to develop a technological platform that will improve economic
management and promote fairer trade for producers.
