Description
Once the stage of visual inspection of bridge structures and the assignment of a health index has
been carried out, it is necessary to identify for those structures that present significant damage and
whose rating is unacceptable or deficient, the possible causes of deterioration, in such a way that
analyze the different pathologies, in order to properly attend to the structures, so that the resources
associated with the intervention are used appropriately.
With this proposal, it is intended to establish a detailed evaluation methodology for the concrete
elements, being the main material (80% of the bridges) in the construction of bridges in Costa Rica,
this detailed evaluation will allow to establish an index of the condition of These elements, indicators
that will complement the work carried out by the eBridge research group, to prioritize interventions
and support decision-making by infrastructure managers.
This evaluation methodology will include the use of techniques or non-destructive tests for the
characterization of the identified pathologies and the identification of possible causes, as well as
the calculation of condition indices for selected elements.
The analysis of the pathologies and the indices that are developed will propose baselines for the
possible recommended interventions to address the identified damages.
The benefits of this proposal is that bridge infrastructure managers will have more standardized
tools to improve decision making.

General Objective
Desarrollar una metodología de evaluación no destructiva para identificar las
posibles causas de patologías relacionadas el concreto en elementos de puentes, con el fin de
caracterizar las patologías y determinar un índice de condición por elemento.
