Project Details

Description

Since year 2002, Costa Rica develops the Tree Improvement Cooperative (GENFORES) with the aim of improving plantations productivity in the region. In these years it has been possible the selection, propagation and commercial production of more trees. Mini cuttings have been the best option of commercial reproduction, based on mini clonal gardens management under environmental-controlled conditions. Among its benefits there are uniformity in plants production, capture of 100% of DNA from superior trees, an efficient environmental control conditions. However, when this technology was adapted to tropical tree species like teak, melina and some native species, it has been found several and important gaps of knowledge. Among others, the most important are related to nutrition needs, fertilization programs, substrate quality, clonal garden plant density, harvest frequency, irrigation programming, etc. Production costs in our conditions are very high and non competitive internationally. Furthermore, clones usage has been generalized in the country over 60% of the planted area due to its effect in wood production. A demand on technical support about this matters is growing not only in Costa Rica, but in the Latin American region. The last technical manual was published in year 2004, based on a technological package related to small and medium size producers. The techniques on this issue have been evolving rapidly and notably in the last 10 years. Therefore, this project aims to improve the technological package of clonal production at commercial scale of Tectona grandes teak), the tree most planted in the Latin American tropical region and, Cordia alliodora (laurel), one of the most promising native trees. As part of the main products of the project, there will be an updated technical manual, which will allow to provide technical support and projection to the forestry sector in the region.
