Hacia una Economía Circular: Gestión sostenible de envases vacíos de plaguicidas de los agricultores del Cantón de Oreamuno, Cartago

Project: Internally funded extension projectsParticipatory and collaborative action

Project Details

Description

The canton of Oreamuno, known for its agricultural production—mainly potatoes and vegetables—has approximately 1,091 farmers, of whom only a minority comply with Regulation No. 17557-MAG-S-TSS regarding the proper handling of pesticides and their containers. Despite efforts by the municipality and the “Limpiemos nuestros campos” Foundation, improper disposal of these residues persists, causing negative impacts on both health and the environment.
This project aims to identify the causes of compliance or non-compliance with the regulations and the level of knowledge of farmers about the associated risks, the barriers and incentives necessary for an adequate management system, analysis of disposal practices, and characterization of involved actors. Based on the findings, the design of a management program is proposed, co-created with a group of target farmers in each of the districts of the canton and with the institutions responsible for its management. The project aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2, 6, 11, and 17, promoting sustainable agriculture, proper water and waste management, and the strengthening of interinstitutional partnerships.
