Description
The construction of alternative practices articulated with the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE)
in the field of tourism shows a great heterogeneity of processes in Latin America. In Mexico,
management is carried out through ejidos or indigenous communities, as well as cooperatives; in
Argentina through small family units and cooperatives, social organizations and peasant and
indigenous communities; in Costa Rica with peasant families and community and clan
organizations; in Ecuador through indigenous communities, social organizations and communitybased enterprises; in Brazil through family units, associations and cooperatives. This diversity of
management forms implies then the existence of organizational and educational processes
associated with each one, with varied implications for the construction of economic alternatives.
What are the differential implications of the heterogeneity of organizational and educational
processes for the alternative management of tourism projects in rural areas? How can we
compare these processes and their effects on the construction of economic solidarity proposals?
As a consequence, with what economic approaches are existing tourism practices in rural areas
of Latin America effectively articulated?
In this context, the present research aims to analyze the organizational and educational
processes that sustain tourism projects managed collectively by rural communities, in order to
understand whether the existing logics, instruments and mechanisms allow us to speak of
alternative experiences to the dominant models, coherent with the value system and ideas of the
SSE. The research will be carried out in 5 Latin American countries: Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador,
Argentina and Brazil. This selection is tentative but reflects a geographical representativeness of
Latin America from north to south, as well as a significant diversity in the known forms of
alternative tourism management in rural areas. The methodological strategy will be developed by
a team present in each country with a responsible researcher. The general coordination of the
local teams will be carried out jointly by UNAM, Mexico and the National University of Quilmes,
Argentina) and each researcher will be responsible for conducting the work in his/her country.

General Objective
