Description

Digital transformation (DT) is a current and relevant topic, it refers to the digital technologies that organizations have been adopting and implementing as different strategies, causing changes in their business models. Since 2018, Costa Rica's Government has proposed a strategy for the country called "Digital Transformation Strategy towards the Bicentennial Costa Rica 4.0". TEC recognizes the importance of developing innovative projects with scientific, economic and social impact, which also contribute to the technology development of the impacted companies, as stated in its institutional policy number seven. According to the institutional vision, the project contributes to the development of relevant innovation, sci-tech, the entrepreneurial initiative and the close link between the country's different social actors, the SMEs in this case. The research is included in the industry knowledge axis, where it covers the country's SMEs from the secondary (processes) and tertiary (services) sectors, as well as the transversal axes of technology and innovation. The project is part of the following lines of research: entrepreneurship and SMEs, and ICTs applied to business' processes and business innovation (CIADEG). On the other hand, it is part of the CIC's lines of research: computer applications in different scientific, technological, organizational and social domains. The purpose of this research is to identify the determining factors in the digital transformation implementation and its impact on the SMEs business models at the Costa Rica's GAM through a mixed research approach to improve the competitiveness in the country's SMEs. The use of software is contemplated for the results analysis, in both the first qualitative phase, NVivo; and the following quantitative study phase with Smart PLS. The topic is relevant as it aims to offer recommendations to Costa Rican businesspeople to start the digital transformation processes for their small or medium enterprises, and it is aligned with the country's digital transformation strategy. It is also a novel project because even though, DT has been promoted in recent years, there is no scientific research of this kind, nor studies that mention the Costa Rican case, which allows filling a gap in the literature and highlights the importance of this research and its potential impact. Within the results of this research, we consider to give a report with the main findings to the MEIC, in order to contribute to the development of the corresponding public policy, also dissemination workshops of the guide with national business people. Finally, regarding the academic product, the results will be published in journals such as Management Decision and/or Technology Innovation Management Review indexed in ISI: Web of Science; or Journal of Small Business Enterp. Develop, indexed in SCOPUS and paper presentations in conferences like ALAFEC and/or CLADEA.
