Evaluación del estado fitosanitario de la madera utilizada por el sector fabricante y tratante de tarimas y cajones para embalaje en Costa Rica.

Project Details

Description

Currently, 45% of the wood harvested in Costa Rica has been used to the manufacture of wooden pallets. The profit margin of the pallet manufacturing companies is extremely low and highly dependent on the business model, being the most important factor the raw material, and the pallet manufacturer has very little control over this element. For this reason, the attention to phytosanitary problems that appear during the manufacturing process and thermal treatment of wood pallets is a priority, otherwise the business becomes unprofitable. The few studies that have been conducted at the national level show that, although the demand is satisfied with the quality of the pallets, nevertheless, the main degree of dissatisfaction is due to the appearance of stains or fungi on the pallets. For this reason, the general objective of this project is to evaluate the phytosanitary status and the wood handling protocols used by manufacturers and processors of pallets and crates for packaging in Costa Rica. To achieve this objective, we will first review material generated at ITCR on the certification processes of industries that apply heat treatment to pallets, and we will conduct interviews to characterize the current state of the industrial pallet sector in Costa Rica. Subsequently, samples of wood that present phytosanitary problems will be taken in manufacturing companies and those that apply heat treatment to wood pallets, to identify the main phytosanitary problems that affect wooden pallets manufacturing and industries that apply heat treatment to pallets. Finally, programs for the management of the main phytosanitary problems that affect wooden pallets companies, both in storage and after the thermal treatment of pallets management, will be validated in a manufacturer and in a recycler of wood pallets. The results will be disseminated through a technical manual that will be socialized among wooden pallets manufacturing and industries that apply heat treatment to pallets. A national workshop will also be held to inform the forestry sector about the results and findings of the research, considering the importance of the wood pallet manufacturing industry in the country.
