Project Details

Description

The project aims to strengthen the governance and sustainable management of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) by enhancing regional capabilities of multidisciplinary teams of professionals, along with the support of national governmental environmental institutions from LAC, in the assessment of water quality (inorganic contaminants) and trophic state (organic and inorganic contaminants) in areas of interest, with an approach in cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) for improving the identification of cyanobacteria by microscopic and molecular techniques. The role of nuclear technologies is focused on the determination of the sources of inorganic contaminants (nitrates and phosphates) in water, using stable isotopic characterization, and the quantification of cyanotoxins (organic natural contaminants), using the radioligand-receptor binding assay (R-RBA) technique. Those actions will generate evaluation reports on the impact of anthropogenic and natural pollutants with the help of nuclear techniques that comply with one of the goals from the Regional Strategic Profile (RSP) for LAC for 2016-2021, in the context of the Regional Cooperation Agreement for the Promotion of Nuclear Science and Technology in Latin America and the Caribbean (ARCAL), and national reports for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Indicator 6.3.2 (Proportion of water with good environmental water quality) in Level 1 and Level 2 in a harmonized way, with intercomparable parameters and databases of results, presented in a website of toxic cyanobacteria in the region and an interactive map of the water quality and trophic state assessment in the studied RBDs that will lead to a better understanding of the occurrence of CyanoHABs in LAC and eventually, to the generation of appropriate laws or regulations for the sustainable management of the surface water bodies of the region.
