Description

This research project aims to identify the Life Skills (LS) fostered in university students at the Costa Rica
Institute of Technology (ITCR), specifically through the School of Culture and Sports (ECyD) and the
Department of Student Life and Academic Services (DEVESA). The study focuses on two main areas: cocurricular
teaching in art and social action, and extra-curricular representative student groups in art and
volunteering, during the period 2022-2024.
The research objectives are to describe the LS promoted in these contexts, identify the main practices
implemented by professors to promote these skills, and enumerate the good practices that enable the
development of LS in university students. Additionally, it seeks to recognize how these teaching and
extra-curricular processes contribute to the promotion of LS among ITCR students.
This study responds to the need for a systematic evaluation of the impact of co-curricular and extracurricular
activities on the integral development of university students. Despite the accumulated
experience in these areas, there are no previous academic studies documenting these contributions to
university student life at ITCR.
The project is framed within the evolution of the concept of skills, from the division between hard and soft
skills to the "Life Skills" promoted by international organizations. LS are defined as psychosocial
competencies that allow individuals to effectively face the challenges of daily and professional life,
including skills such as self-awareness, emotional management, assertive communication and problemsolving.

The research is based on the premise that artistic and volunteering activities, both in co-curricular and
extra-curricular settings, play a crucial role in the development of these skills. By identifying and analyzing
effective practices in these contexts, the study seeks to provide empirical evidence on the impact of these
activities on the comprehensive education of students.
This pioneering project intends to initiate a line of longitudinal research on the development of LS in ITCR
university students, contributing to validate the institutional commitment to comprehensive education.
Expected results include the identification of good practices and areas for improvement in co-curricular
teaching and extra-curricular activities.
The research also responds to ITCR institutional agreements that promote the certification of student
participation in cultural and volunteering groups, as well as the integration of arts and humanities in
comprehensive university education.
The findings of this study could have significant implications for the design of educational and
extracurricular programs in higher education institutions.
