Project Details
Description
Potato is the fourth most important food crop in the world, after rice, corn and wheat, potato is one of the
most important crops in our country, many farmers and families depend on this crop, who have been
dedicated for generations to produce this tuber to supply the domestic market. For the year 2022, 2,912.4
hectares were cultivated, with a harvest of 48,171.6 metric tons (INEC- Costa Rica NATIONAL
AGRICULTURAL SURVEY 2022). Among the most cultivated varieties are Floresta (which is a white
tuber with a good yield), which adapts to the different planting areas of the country. One of the most
effective interactions is the ability of plants to establish relationships with microorganisms. Mycorrhizae
stand out as mutualistic associations between certain soil fungi and plant roots (Camargo-Ricalde et al.
2012), mycorrhizae are seen in the near future as a substitute for chemical fertilizers, so studies on this
crop should be generated to meet the needs of farmers. The project will evaluate the effect of arbuscular
mycorrhizae on the development of potato plants, Floresta variety, under field and greenhouse
conditions, where its effect on leaf development and productivity will be evaluated.
