Description

A complex web of biological interactions characterizes the dynamics of tropical island ecosystems. In the absence of large predators, these ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to the introduction of non-native species. This research project addresses a critical problem in the forests of Cocos Island National Park (PNIC), where the presence of feral pigs (Sus scrofa) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) puts pressure on natural regeneration, impacting the park's conservation goals. The effects of this herbivore coexistence, compounded by the absence of natural predators, are largely unknown and represent an existential threat to local biodiversity, including the key endemic species for the ecosystem, Sacoglottis holdridgei. The project aims to analyze the process of natural forest regeneration in Cocos Island National Park to identify technical and ecological challenges for its restoration and conservation. To achieve these objectives, we plan a detailed study of forest dynamics and regeneration using the existing network of permanent plots and installing temporary plots in sampling information gaps within the area east of Cerro Iglesias. Reports indicate a decline in the herbivore population in this area due to eradication efforts. We will sample and monitor regeneration between 10 cm in height and 10 cm in diameter. The expected outcomes include generating a forest restoration protocol and protocols for the most important tree species.
