Description

With the increase in population, the demand for the products of different industries has increased;
Most of these products are based on polymers, plastic, nylon, silicone, among others. Although the
production of some of these products is cheaper, others involve high energy demand and the use
of polluting raw materials. This causes a significant impact on the environment, because its
manufacturing process is highly polluting and the materials used for its production rarely have the
possibility of being reused or recycled, remaining accumulated in landfills, land and even rivers. For
this reason, there is a global trend to search for and produce materials that come from sustainable
sources. Some of these renewable materials are based on lignocellulosic materials from forestry
and agricultural crops, in combination with other microorganisms such as certain types of fungi to
form new biomaterials. At the same time, in Costa Rica, the generation of lignocellulosic waste,
including wood, has become a significant problem. The Costa Rican forestry industry produces
nearly 500,000 m3 of waste. Furthermore, in the case of Costa Rica and other countries, the use of
these wastes is innovative as sources of energy or sources for the production of more sustainable
products. Given this context and the industrial increase, the need arises to incorporate new
alternative materials that come from natural and ecological sources that are friendly to the
environment, in order to reduce the environmental impact caused in the industry and contribute to
the environment with the use of waste. organic. It is for this reason that the present study aims to
determine the properties of a wood-fungus biocomposite using 2 species of wood and 3 species of
fungi, for the manufacture of biodegradable products. Obtaining the optimal substrate conditions,
inoculation time and fungal colonization time to produce a commercial product and, thus, the
culmination of the project proposes the development of 2 product prototypes in which the material
can be used.
