Project Details

Description

The primary objective of this research proposal is to analyze the usage of digital technologies related to
Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Artificial Inteligencia (AI), as well as evaluate the impact of the use of these
technologies over the financial and non-financial performance of manufacturing businesses located in Latin
America and Spain.
This proposal falls into the roadmap of a research line that specifically deals with the analysis of the relationship
between digital transformation and organizational performance. Researchers from the School of Business at
the Costa Rica Institute of Technology as well as researchers working for Toulouse Business School (TBS
Education, Francia) and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC Barcelona Tech) actively participate in
the research line in which this proposal is framed.
Specifically, this proposal seeks to answer relevant research questions fueling the academic debate
nowadays: what is the role of information technologies in the production processes of manufacturing firms
located in Latin America and Spain? Furthermore, are digital technologies a mechanism that supports the
efficient transition towards business models based on the provision of advanced services?
Concerning the proposal’s methodology, a variety of quantitative analyses will be applied to three data sets.
First, we will employ a database jointly created by researchers from Toulouse Business School (TBS
Education) and the School of Business at the Costa Rica Institute of Technology, which was specifically
designed for the purposes of this proposal and research line. Second, we will exploit a dataset provided by the
Iberoamerican Observatory of SMEs. Third, we will use a database on the digitalization process of Latin
American SMEs which was the results of a collaboration agreement between universities from Uruguay (project
leader), Argentina, Ecuador, Mexico, and Costa Rica where the ITCR is the research partner.
This research proposal will have implications for strategy makers and entrepreneurs in manufacturing
industries, the design of support policies, as well as for academics developing their research in this knowledge
field.
