Project Details
Description
This proposal outlines a research project aimed at developing a multilingual and multicultural digital platform to support the bilingual development of deaf individuals in Brazil and Costa Rica, focusing on both Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS) and Costa Rican Sign Language (LESCO).
The initiative seeks to create a comparative sign language dictionary that connects corresponding signs across both languages, facilitating the acquisition of sign language skills by both deaf and hearing users. It builds on prior work with the PIELS platform at the Tecnológico de Costa Rica, in collaboration with Universidade Estadual do São Paulo (UNESP) and the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP).
The research activities include identifying and analyzing existing sign language dictionaries, assessing the needs of deaf communities, designing the digital platform, and evaluating its usability and educational impact. Methodologically, the project involves a literature review, comparative linguistic analysis, case studies with deaf communities, and iterative platform development.
Theoretical foundations are grounded in cognitive ergonomics, linguistic context, and lexicography, with particular attention to phenomena such as cognates, semantically misleading equivalents (false friends), and linguistic borrowings. The proposal also outlines a timeline of activities, provides references, and highlights the importance of accessibility and intercultural exchange.
