Project Details
Description
The northern region of the province of Cartago has a strong agricultural tradition, characterized by a predominance of small-scale farming and intensive land use under a similarly intensive application of agrochemicals. Consequently, surface and groundwater sources, which are used to supply water to the local population, are affected. One of these pesticides is chlorothalonil, which has been found in the area's aqueducts in several studies.
This project aims to develop a strategy for improving the water quality of drinking water sources affected by agricultural processes and which have tested positive for chlorothalonil metabolites in the canton of Oreamuno, Cartago. This will be achieved through the evaluation of water quality in sources affected by human activities, the identification and mapping of potential sources of contamination, and the research, development, proposal, and evaluation of treatment operations that allow for the removal of the contaminant at a cost affordable to local operators and organizations. All of this is reflective that brings to producers, aqueduct operators, local government, educational centers and the general population, scientifically supported information that demonstrates the impact of human activities on water and the joint responsibility to ensure its quality.
