Description
The Gym of Mechatronic Devices for Physical Rehabilitation (REHAB-GYM) aims to
contribute primarily to the quality of life of individuals who have experienced
cerebrovascular events or prolonged hospital, through the design of a physical
rehabilitation gym integrated with mechatronic devices, to improve the functionality of the
lower limbs. The problem is defined as the lack of knowledge about the progress of the
patient's rehabilitation process by clinical staff, a situation that warrants the design of a
system that identifies and records the level of achievement of the clinical practice
objective. Therefore, multidisciplinary research and development will address this
problem by designing devices that will have a numerical record, detailing date and time,
level of achievement and strength, in a patient-clinician interaction. Additionally, the
system will include the design of a patient-clinician user interface that will provide realtime feedback on the achievement in clinical practice. With this technology, costs can be
reduced, and the number of patients who can be attended to simultaneously by a single
professional can be increased. Likewise, patients can undergo a more intensive
rehabilitation process, enhancing their recovery and rehabilitation, thus reducing the
severity of sequelae and dependence following a cerebrovascular event, which will
enhance their performance upon reintegration into their work and community. In the initial
stage of the project, the proposed rehabilitation system consisted of a compact, affordable
solution based on games for upper limbs. In this new stage, the integration of
rehabilitation systems for lower limbs, balance, and the cognitive aspect of the patient is
proposed. The proposed approach is based on creating an entertaining therapeutic
environment and social therapy where patients can interact with each other, thereby
increasing motivation to exercise. Research variables include, among others: lower limb
morphology and the design of a system that minimizes compensations, hyperactivity, and
effort during clinical practice, keeping a daily record of progress in terms of displacement,
adjustable forces according to the limbs under rehabilitation and exercise prescription,
criteria for selecting washable materials to avoid cross-contamination, aerobic activities,
and measurement of aerobic capacity, safety for both the patient and the clinical staff
using it, and preventive maintenance to maximize the use time of the REHAB GYM
