Description

Diabetes is considered an epidemic, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), whose
prevalence is increasing, mainly in low and middle income countries and it is estimated that it will be
the seventh cause of death by 2030. In Costa Rica, in 2015, 9 172 new cases of Diabetes mellitus
were reported and 983 people died of this disease. To control diabetes, doctors recommend oral
medications or insulin subcutaneously, modify diet and exercise. But one of the biggest limitations
is that these medications are often ineffective, cause side effects and are not accessible because of
their high cost. So many patients use natural products. The genus of succulent plants Kalanchoe
spp ("leaf of air"), is part of the family of Crassulaceae, in many homes grow wild or are purchased
as ornamental, given the fashion by the succulents. It is known in other countries for being a rich
source of therapeutic agents for the prevention of many diseases, and also as "insulin", because its
ability to reduce blood glucose levels is mentioned when consuming fresh or infused leaves. In the
first stage of this investigation, the species K. pinnata showed high antioxidant activity, presence of
phenolic compounds (flavonoids), macrolements and microlements, high inhibition of the enzyme αamylase, which together with in vivo tests showed its hypoglycemic activity in an acute model in
healthy rats. In this second stage, we intend to confirm by means of more specific tests, using
chronic and acute models in diabetic rats, the hypoglycemic capacity of the standardized leaf
extract of K. pinnata.

General Objective

Determinar el efecto hipoglicemiante sistémico (crónico vs agudo) de un extracto
estandarizado (polifenoles totales) de Kalanchoe pinnata en ratas diabéticas.
