Description
Bamboo, a plant belonging to the Bambusoideae subfamily of the Poaceae family, is highly versatile and used in multiple applications, primarily in construction, paper production, furniture, musical instruments, poles, panels, flooring, and handicrafts. In Costa Rica, nearly ten species are planted in commercial plantations in three development centers: the Northern Region and Sarapiquí with 224 hectares; the Canton of Pérez Zeledón and Buenos Aires with 51 hectares; and the Osa Peninsula with 1,996 hectares. Despite research on its anatomical, physical, and mechanical characteristics, the structural use of bamboo in the country is still limited due to the lack of uniform information and variability between species, which makes it difficult to create design standards and technical parameters applicable to each individual species.
The market for bamboo products shows great growth potential, as it is a sustainable, innovative material with growing demand, driven by designers and architects seeking ecological alternatives in construction. However, to fully exploit these opportunities, Costa Rica needs a solid research base that allows for the standardization of allowable stresses and the development of design tables for different species, facilitating their safe and efficient incorporation into structural projects.
In response, a study was proposed to determine the morphological, physical, and mechanical properties, develop allowable stress values and potential design tables, and design and construct a construction prototype using the design values of four main bamboo species (Guadua angustifolia, Bambusa vulgaris green variety, Gigantochloa atroviolacea, and Dendrocalamus asper) used in commercial reforestation in Costa Rica, thus promoting their safer and more effective use in construction.
