Description

Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is a medium-sized herbaceous plant (0.50-1.00m) characterized by having three types of stems: those that form the aerial part of the plant, the underground ones or stolons with horizontal growth and the tubers that form at the end of the stolons and constitute the typically edible part of the crop (Jaramillo, 1979). This tuber has played an important role in the nutrition of humanity, sustaining entire populations on its own, and it is the first food as an energy source (Jaramillo, 1979). It is rich in proteins and amino acids, some minerals and vitamin "C" (Guerrero, 1984). It is currently the fourth most important crop in the world after wheat, corn and rice. (ICA, 2021), it is one of the most consumed crops in the country, 78.51% of this tuber is planted in the northern area of Cartago (Llano Grande, Tierra Blanca, Cot, Pacayas), Zarcero and the area of Los Santos (Copey, La Cima). The country is making efforts to improve factors such as the availability of quality seed, but there are still very important activities such as the excessive use of agrochemicals, availability of irrigation water and the monitoring of agro-environmental conditions through sensors and the development of APP platforms that make it easier for the farmer and technicians to make the most pertinent decisions for the development of the crop.

Agricultural Extension Agency of MAG in Tierra Blanca, reports that in the north of Cartago, in recent years, there have been productive problems in crops, including potatoes, motivated among other things, by a constant decrease in yields, high production costs and a relative scarcity of water. (Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería-Instituto de Desarrollo Rural, 2021).

Currently, potato producers in the north of Cartago, and all producers too, have few or minimal technological tools that allow them to make decisions in their productive activity. There is no

instrument that allows them to make decisions about the activity based on economic results, are unaware of the requirements for adequate support of financial and environmental processes related to production.

It is intended to build a technological platform that, through the quantification of financial expenses, pesticides and water applied in production, develop algorithms that allow potato producers to establish the economic and environmental benefits of the activity, within the framework of the technological package offered by the national high technology program for the economic reactivation of the agricultural sector (AGRINNOVACIÓN 4.0) in the Central Eastern Region of Cartago.

The development of the project will be mainly through visits to the farms of the producers where the data related to adequate economic management, savings in the use of agrochemicals and the measurement of the water footprint in potato production will be recorded and systematized.
