Project Details
Description
The overall objective of the project is to develop a mobile application and field instruments to predict the growth and productivity of clonal teak and melina in contrasting environments in Costa Rica. The action plan will consist of adjusting the best possible DBH growth prediction model based on soil and climate variables. To do this, it will be necessary to enrich the existing GENFORES databases with available climate and soil information. It will begin with the establishment of a network of 10 elite clonal plots of each species in at least five geographical locations, in contrasting climatic environments, from regions with high rainfall to those with the longest dry season. Planting will take place at least two sites in the Pacific and two in the north and Caribbean, on land owned by leading forestry companies. At each location, a low-cost climate monitoring team will be established, as well as manufactured dendrometers. A complete soil analysis will be carried out at each site. Monoclonal plots will be established and managed in accordance with the most advanced technology package for both species, where the site will receive the best possible preparation, corrective amendments will be applied to the soil in accordance with the analyses, weed control will be timely, and pruning will be applied from 3-4 months. Physical growth measurements will be taken every six months during the project, where total height growth in the first year and DBH will be determined, and the quality of the first four logs will be rated. Using these 10 elite clones (genotypes) in different environments will allow us to control the genetic variable, so growth will be attributable solely to the effect of the environment and the “genotype x environment” interaction. Climatological information will be used to develop predictive models, which will evaluate the effect of temperature, rainfall, monthly precipitation vs. diameter growth, duration of the dry period, among other variables, to determine the Effective Growth Month variable. Monthly DBH growth will be determined by installing dendrometers on five trees in each monoclonal plot in each location from approximately 6-9 months onwards.
