Project Details

Description

This project proposes the development of a biopolymer as a value-added strategy derived from recoverable residues of rice milling (Oryza sativa). The initiative arises from the growing need to reduce the environmental impact caused by agroindustrial waste and to take advantage of rice by-products to create sustainable materials with potential applications in the food sector.
The study first aims to characterize the physicochemical properties of the rice milling by-products in order to identify their most relevant attributes and evaluate their potential as raw materials for biopolymer formulation. Based on these findings, the project seeks to design a prototype of a food-grade biopolymer (bioplastic film) that can contribute to food security and the efficient use of agricultural resources, thereby promoting more sustainable practices within the rice industry. Overall, this proposal aims to lay the groundwork for the valorization of rice by-products as a source of biodegradable materials, promoting value addition, technological innovation, and the advancement of a circular economy within the Costa Rican agroindustrial sector.
