Project Details
Description
The project will be developed with the support and accumulated work of GENFORES over the last
10 years in the development of molecular tools to support the improvement and conservation of
forest genetic resources. The general objective is to consolidate a platform of molecular tools and
services to support the management of genetic improvement programs to boost the productivity
and competitiveness of forestry companies in the Latin American region. The project will begin with
the consolidation of the use of SSR molecular markers (microsatellites) in teak and melina, for use
on an operational scale, by identifying genotypes and determining parentage in breeding
populations. As a second line of work, the association of SNPs detected during the recent
sequencing of teak with genomic regions of economic importance, such as growth rate, wood
properties, wood color, disease resistance, resistance to climate change, among others, will be
reviewed. To achieve the use of the SNPs, it will be necessary to convert them into genetic markers
for commercial use. As an important part of each step of the project, all genetic markers will be
validated prior to their commercial use. It is expected to start with the genetic collections of
GENFORES at TEC, as well as those of the member companies of the cooperative. It is expected
to consolidate the identity of the elite collections, as well as to determine the kinship or consanguinity
status of each of the breeding populations.
