Project Details
Description
The versatility of wood in housing construction has made it a suitable material for the
environmental, cultural and accessibility conditions of indigenous territories in Costa Rica.
In the last 3 years, through the BANHVI, at least 550 solutions have been built annually in
the different indigenous territories of Costa Rica.
However, the same characteristics of the material mean that it requires adequate
maintenance, which if not carried out compromises the safety and useful life of the properties
with the social implications that this could have.
With the objective of strengthening capacities for the self-management of small
maintenance, repair and expansion works of social interest houses built in wood, a
participatory process will be carried out with indigenous families benefiting from the housing
bonus in the territories of Ujarrás and Salitre in Buenos Aires from Puntarenas.
It will begin with a participatory diagnosis of the main injuries found in already built houses,
in order to complete the training needs for the maintenance and repair of the homes. The
training process will be done through workshops in which the people who own the houses
will be able to apply the knowledge in real buildings.
Through group interviews and mapping, proposals for housing extension designs will be built
in a participatory manner in accordance with the Bribri and Cabécar worldview.
Technical guides and informative material will be generated respecting the indigenous
culture, in addition, the process followed will be permanently disseminated.
