Project Details
Description
The purpose of this research proposal is to characterize the delinquent debtor of the non-regulated credit
sector. Specifically, we would like to identify the profile of the critical delinquent debtor (in judicial collection
or uncollectible) and the differences that exist between both categories of debtors.
It should be noted that the literature is abundant in terms of delinquent debtors in general, but there is a
significant lack in terms of critical delinquent debtors. The study population is made up of more than
1 000 000 subjects with delinquent debts in Costa Rica registered in the Equifax bureau databases.
It should be noted that this proposal gives continuity to two previous research projects -approved by the VIErelated to the behavior of the financial consumer, where the research team has developed -for three
consecutive years- an annual report on the delinquent debt of the sector unregulated financial system in
Costa Rica. This has been possible thanks to the agreement signed by Equifax and the Tecnológico de
Costa Rica (TEC).
Going through the previous reports, we find that between 2019 and 2020 the delinquent debt remained
contained despite the COVID-19 pandemic; while in June 2021, once the extensions in credit operations
were running out, the delinquent debt worsened considerably. Unfortunately, in 2022 there was a new
increase in delinquency in the accounts of the non-regulated credit sector. This increase, although moderate,
is worrisome in terms of the seriousness of these delinquent debts, since, for the first time in three years,
more than half were in judicial collection or in a state of bad debt.
For the analysis of the data, descriptive and correlational statistical models will be used to know the general
profile of the delinquent debtor and a binomial logistic analysis to identify the variables that have the greatest
strength to explain the possibility that a delinquent debtor is in critical condition or not. .
Finally, it is important to highlight the positive impact that this project can have on financial education, the
quality of life of Costa Ricans and on the transparency of the financial sector, this is how the result of this
proposal contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals of eliminate poverty and promote economic
growth.

Research Lines
