Description

In commercial reforestation in Costa Rica with native species, medium-density wood commercial species have
been used, among which cedro (Cedrela odorata), laurel (Cordia alliodora), jaúl (Alnus acuminata), cebo
(Vochysia guatemalensis) and botarrama (Vochysia ferruginea) stand out. ferruginea), and species whose
wood has very high commercial value, such as mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), cocobolo (Dalbergia
retusa), ron ron (Astronium graveolens) and cristóbal (Platymiscium curuense). However, despite their
commercial importance, except for mahogany, the quality and properties of the wood of the species considered
to be of high commercial value are little known when they come from forest plantations, unlike the mediumdensity species mentioned, which have been extensively studied. The lack of information on the properties
and quality of the wood of species of high commercial value is a problem for their commercialization, since the
consumer associates the quality of wood from planted trees with the quality of wood from trees growing in
natural forests, when the reality is that there are some differences, especially in terms of the color of the wood
and in some of its physical and mechanical properties. So, the present research proposal aims to determine
the properties (physical, mechanical, chemical, and energetic), the quality and the commercial potential of
cocobolo (Dalbergia retusa) and cristóbal (Platymiscium curuense) wood from forest plantations with an aged
between 25-28 years. This research project will provide information on the properties and quality of wood of
these two species of high commercial value, which will serve as input to establish a marketing strategy and
thus guide its use and market niche. Which will be of great value not only for reforestation companies and
small producers, but also for small organizations that are dedicated to the production of handicrafts at the
national level.

General Objective
