Project Details

Description

Iron and manganese limit access to drinking water, although they are of low toxicity, they
impart color, particles and odor. In the country they are reported in ASADAS and AyA. In the
country, in the best of cases, water is distributed in tanker trucks and, in very few, a highcost physicochemical treatment is given. Alternatively, biofiltration takes advantage of the
bacteria present in the water to oxidize iron and manganese, without chemicals. This
technology was studied at the TEC in the VIE project (1460-066) completed in 2021. It is
intended to be transferred to the Huetar Caribbean and Central Pacific regions. There is
collaboration with the ASADAS Sustainability Centers (CESAGUA and CAISA). Additionally,
the Sustainable Use Plan (PAS) of the Parrita Aquifer, made up of AyA, ASADAS and the
Municipality, participates in the Central Pacific. Also, the AyA Research and Development
UEN will collaborate, which will allow this governing body to implement it in its aqueducts
and authorize/suggest its implementation in ASADAS. The education of boards of directors,
technical and administrative team of the ASADAS, the AyA Research and Development
UEN and the staff of the Regional Offices of Communal Aqueducts (ORAC-AYA) are
contemplated. Model systems will be designed, installed and monitored in each region. The
ASADA el Limbo de Duacarí (quintile one) and an AyA aqueduct in Parrita (quintile 2). Once
the systems are operational, visits and sessions will be organized to disseminate results to
the boards of directors, the technical and administrative team of the ASADAS, and the AyA.
Thus, it is expected to transfer a sustainable and low-cost technology to the ASADAS and
the AyA, generating an effect at scale.

General Objective

medio ambiente.
