Project Details

Description

The primary objective of this research proposal is to analyze risk perceptions at the workplace among workers
and work-safety technicians working in different industries for companies located in Costa Rica and Spain.
Additionally, the proposal seeks to evaluate the relationship between the level of human capital and previous
experience with work accidents and the rational and emotional component of risk perception.
Viewed through the “behavioral economics” lens, this proposal is part of the roadmap of a line of research that
seeks to understand the factors that explain the discrepancies in the perception of occupational risks among
workers, as well as between workers and technicians specialized in occupational health and safety.
Researchers from the School of Business and the School of Engineering in Occupational Safety and
Environmental Hygiene of the Costa Rica Institute of Technology, as well as researchers from the National
University of Costa Rica and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC Barcelona Tech) actively participate
in the research line in which this proposal is framed.
Specifically, this proposal seeks to answer a pertinent research question fueling the academic debate in the
field of “behavioral economics”: what is the specific role of people’s codified (schooling and training) and tacit
(prior experience) knowledge in explaining the formation of work risk perceptions?
Concerning the proposal’s methodology, a variety of quantitative analyses will be applied to two data sets
specifically designed for achieving achieve the objectives set out in this proposal as well as in the line of
research. Both databases were created jointly by researchers from the ITCR (School of Business and School
of Engineering in Occupational Safety and Environmental Hygiene) and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia
(UPC Barcelona Tech).
This research will have implications for business managers working in different industries, the design of support
public policy aimed at improving work safety, as well as academic research in the “behavioral economics” field.
