Project Details
Description
One of the biggest problems faced by indigenous peoples is the loss of their traditional
farming systems due to the rapid insertion of monocultures in their communities, which
generate dependence on money as the only way to make a living. Another aspect is the
difficulty faced by indigenous farmers in harvesting their crops due to the variations and
effects of climate change. The above aspects have an impact on food sovereignty and loss
of ancestral crop diversity.
The Schools of Agribusiness and Social Sciences in collaboration and at the request of the
Association of Indigenous Women Cabécar Kjala Bata present this proposal with the
purpose of identifying the ancestral practices of production, conservation and consumption
of food that are carried out in the indigenous Cabécar territory of Alto Pacuare to strengthen
food sovereignty in the face of climate change.
This “strengthening activity” is the first approach to propose an extension project. We aim
an approach with this first phase of a participatory process, based on social mapping, to
understand community dynamics and make informed decisions regarding climate change
and food production in the territory of Alto Pacuare
