Project Details

Description

This extension proposal seeks to give continuity to the project executed in 2011 to 2012, entitled "Pilot
training plan for the development of oratory, aimed at primary school teachers, as a response to the
problems of oral expression of children of 5 centers of the central canton of Cartago”, presented to the
Division of Research and Extension of the Technological Institute of Costa Rica. We decided to resume
this project for two important reasons: firstly, because we received a letter from the regional Spanish
advisor from Cartago, in which she expressed the need to extend training in rural schools. The
justification is that since 2014, when the curricular programs were made official by the Ministry of Public
Education (MEP), there has been no training about public speaking.
The second reason is because the first time the extension project was carried out, the materials
designed were created based on the educational programs that were in use in that period (2008-2012);
however, the content of the programs changed after 2013. Therefore, it is urgent to carry out a review
of the proposed topics and update the materials to strengthen the skill of oratory in the student
population. The program is aimed at teachers of the primary education sector of I and II Cycle, since
we first intend to awaken their motivation for the development of oral expression, so that they can later
transmit it in the same way to their students. In addition, it is envisioned that schools start public
speaking workshops that then lead to a contest for the student population to encourage the constant
practice of this communicative skill.
The project is based on an interdisciplinary approach because it involves different experts in philology,
linguistics, information technology management, Spanish didactics, and design. It includes staff from
two departments and two campuses of the Technological Institute of Costa Rica. In this way, during
the stages of the project, different experts will play a part according to their expertise. The relevance of
the project lies in the contribution to the educational programs of the MEP, specifically in strengthening
the ability of oratory, to improve the quality of education. Finally, the project responds to the Institutional
Strategic Plan 2020-2025 (PEI-MEP) that promotes the innovation and updating of school programs in
accordance with social and productive demands
